Jordan- Minister of Agriculture meets French ambassador

Amman, Oct. 31 (Petra)- Minister of Agriculture and Environment, Ibrahim Shahaheda, discussed on Wednesday with the French ambassador to Amman David Bertolotti relations between the two countries, especially in the agriculture and environment sectors.

During the meeting, the minister highlighted the impact of the Syrian refugee crisis on Jordan and its natural resources and infrastructure, announcing the total assistance Jordan has received from international donors does not exceed 30 percent of what is required to enable the Kingdom fulfill its obligations towards the Syrian refugees.

On this context, he called on donor countries to provide the necessary financial and technical support to enable Jordan to deal with repercussions of the region's crises.

The minister reviewed needs of the agricultural sector, especially in irrigation systems and the integration of modern technology based renewable energy.

He said the government is working to expand the organic crops to compete in the international markets, adding the current agricultural legislation in force will be amended to accommodate this type of agriculture.

The minister lauded the support and contributions of the French government to Jordan in the agricultural and environmental sectors.

For his part, Bertolotti praised Jordan's efforts to host the Syrian refugees, expressing the readiness of the French government to provide support in the fields of energy, agriculture and environment to enable the Kingdom implement plans and programs in these sectors.

He said Jordan is a "strategic" partner in international fora on pressing humanitarian issues emanating from its pivotal role in the region.
