(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) IRBIL, Aug 17 (KUNA) -- The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) is implementing 91 projects to stabilize Sinjar district, west of Mosul, which so-called Islamic State (IS) invaded in 2014, said Head of UN Regional Office Ricardo Rodriguez Friday.
The UN projects include schools, health clinics, hospitals, wells and water networks, Rodriguez addressed the first international conference in Irbil on the genocide of Yazidis in Sinjar.
One of the most important projects is to provide electricity for about 100,000 Yazidis in Sinjar and Sinuni, by linking the power lines of Sinjar and Sinuni with the dam of Mosul, he pointed out.
There was a UNDP project to rebuild 1,064 houses in the Sinjar area before the end of the year, he said, adding that the phase was completed.
Yazidis are suffering, need psychological help and financial support, many of whom are still missing, mostly females, Rodriguez said.
The continuing genocide requires the international community, the Iraqi government and humanitarian organizations to carry out their humanitarian and moral duties towards the Yazidis to put an end to the tragedy of Sinjar, said Head of the Yazidi Affairs Office of the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) Khairi Bozani, During an IS attack in 2014, the organization's militants kidnapped more than 6,000 Yazidis, 3,311 of whom were released later, but the fate of 3,102 is still unknown, Bozani stressed.
