New Delhi, Sept 26 (KNN) In a relief to the handicraft sector that has been demanding a revision of the GST rates on their products; the central government is in the process of revising the tax rates on certain handicrafts, Ashok Kumar Sahu, Chief Executive Officer of Orissa Rural and Urban Producers' Association (ORUPA) told KNN.

Talking to KNN, Sahu informed about the latest development with regard to the GST revision on certain items.

Though a final list of the items with revised tax rate is yet to come, Sabai ropes and cups made for Sal and Soali leaves that were earlier placed under the 18 per cent tax slab is expected to be placed under 5 per cent after the revision.

Also an exemption on the idols made of clay is under consideration, whereas tax rate on idols made out of stones are to be placed in a reduced tax slab of 12 per cent, that was taxed earlier under 28 per cent.

The move by the central government comes as a response to the repeated demands of the sector even before the roll out of the Goods and Services Tax (GST) in the country.

Also earlier Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik had written the PMO demanding revision of tax rates as well as exemption for the sector. (KNN/ DA)
