Turkey- Japan MP promoting childcare leave resigns over affair

(MENAFN- The Journal Of Turkish Weekly) A Japanese parliamentarian who sparked debate by declaring his intention to take “paternity leave” with the aim of promoting women’s rights resigned Friday for allegedly having an affair during his wife’s pregnancy.

Kensuke Miyazaki a lower house member from the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) apologized for "inappropriate acts" at a news conference expressing regret for the contradiction between his actions and his public campaigns Kyodo News reported.

"I offer my sincere apologies for causing trouble through my inappropriate acts" the 35-year-old lawmaker said. "I did a very harsh thing to my wife."

Miyazaki has been embroiled in a scandal since the Shukan Bunshun magazine reported that he had spent a night in late January with a woman in the entertainment industry.

The incident allegedly occurred six days before his wife -- Megumi Kaneko also an LDP lower house MP -- gave birth to their son in Tokyo.

He had earlier received both praise and criticism after he announced his plan to take paternity leave in what Kyodo reported as “an unprecedented move” in Japan’s male-dominated legislature whose lower house lacks regulation about childcare leave.

A lower house by-election for his constituency Kyoto No. 3 district is due to be held April 24 alongside that for Hokkaido No. 5.
