October 29 2014 Key West FL-Over the past several years Key West Florida has slowly changed from a definitively seasonal destination vacation spot to become one of the most popular year round choices for island weddings and island vacations. No matter how popular any other time of year gets however nothing compares to the last full week of October. This year was no exception. Fantasy Fest 2014 which ran from October 17th through the 26th is expected to have drawn over 110000 people the most people to ever visit the southernmost island at one time.
“We certainly expected to have a remarkable year and of course we were crossing our fingers in hopes of breaking the record” said Carl Stohl coordinator for the Florida Keys Tourism Council. “The advance numbers were higher than average but a lot of how successful any event in Key West is depends on the weather and last minute people coming from the mainland of South Florida. When we had the bad rain during the middle of the week we thought we might be in trouble.”
Indeed many people expressed dismay when news broke of a tropical depression that moved over the Florida Keys during the middle part of the festivities. Thankfully many people who were travelling down had already arrived and by Friday morning the bad weather was replaced with beautiful sunshine convincing the Floridians to come even further south. They did and in record numbers.
“I’ve been talking with such Key West restaurants like the Roof Top Café and other places that are part of the parade route” Mr. Stohl said. “Everybody was reporting sold out nights full houses and everything that you could hope for in order to label this a success. It will still take some time to collect all of the information from the various hotels and guest houses not to mention the surveys we submit to private owners who rent out their apartments but working with the police and based on their crowd control numbers we are positive we had at least 110000 people and possibly several thousand more than that.” When asked how he would celebrate such great news of a successful if busy week Mr. Stohl laughed and replied “Sleeping for three days!”
