Kurdistan Calls for Assisting Refugees


The government of Iraqi Kurdistan Region has called on the federal government and the international community to intensify humanitarian assistance provided for the refugees in the province.

"There are over 1.5 million refugees in Kurdistan" said Assistant head of Kurdistan's Department of Foreign Relations, Dindar Zebari said at a press conference on Tuesday, adding that this huge number of refugees poses a threat to existing resources and represents a great responsibility on local governments as well as the provincial government.

He ask the federal government to shoulder its responsibilities and to provide humanitarian and financial assistance to Kurdistan region.

He stressed the need for coordination between international organizations, regional government and the federal government as well as international communication for providing aides to displaced people in the region.
