Putin urges Obama to stop use of force against Ukraine's E. province

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) Russian President Vladimir Putin called on his US counterpart Barack Obama Monday to intervene to stop the government in Ukraine from using force against pro-Russia protesters in eastern provinces

Putin made his appeal during a phone call with Obama, the Russian President's press office said in a statement

Putin, who described reported Russian intervention in Ukraine as "mere speculations," said Ukrainian authorities should involve all political forces and provinces in constitutional reforms to pave way for the establishment of a federal state

Putin attributed protests in eastern provinces in Ukraine to lack of keenness of authorities in Kiev to consider demands of the Russian-language speakers

Putin and Obama, said the statement, agreed to continue diplomatic cooperation to address the crisis in Ukraine ahead of a meeting in Geneva between the US, Russia, the EU and Ukraine, due on April 17

Ukrainian forces stormed a number of cities in eastern Ukraine to disperse protests, but the military operation failed after many people were killed and injured
