Ireland celebrates 60th anniversary of involvement in UN peacekeeping missions

(MENAFN) Ireland has held a ceremony to celebrate the 60th anniversary of its participation in the UN peacekeeping missions.

The ceremony in Dublin Castle in downtown Dublin has been attended by Irish President Michael Higgins and Prime Minister Leo Varadkar.

During the event, a video message has been shown with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres hailing the country's role along the UN peacekeeping course.

The Irish president stated at the event "since 1958, members of the Defence Forces have stood guard or patrolled a zone of separation in the world's most volatile places. This is a unique record and one of which the Defence Forces and the Irish people can be very proud,"
