(MENAFN- NewsIn.Asia) Colombo, March 23 (DDNews): A Sri Lankan cabinet minister has said that the Sri Lankan bureaucracy needs to look at its Indian counterpart to improve public administration in the country.
Speaking at a function organized by the High commission of India here on Thursday, the Sri Lankan Minister for Transport and Civil Aviation, Nimal Sripala de Silva, said that the Sri Lankan public administration is lacking in quality. Lankan public servants therefore need to go by Indian ideas and Indian experience in this field.
The function was organized to celebrate Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) program and the International Students Day. Sri Lankan students who had studied in India on scholarships provided by the Indian government were felicitated.
The Sri Lankan minister asserted that the political system prevailing in the region may lead to fragile governments with no single party having a majority. In a situation of this sort, people will need to have a bureaucracy which serves the country irrespective of the political situation.
The minister called for people to people contact and cooperative development of skills so that India and Sri Lanka can grow together as partners in development.
In his address, the Indian High Commissioner Taranjit Singh Sandhu said that Sri Lanka is one of the largest beneficiaries of the ITEC programme. India offers 750 long –term and 400 short term scholarships to Sri Lankan students.
Sandhu noted that the ITEC day and International Students Day reflect India's belief that only knowledge and prosperity can increase through sharing. He said that India's experience may be of direct relevance to Sri Lanka.
He recalled that last year, for the first time, the entrance examination for admission to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technologies was held in Colombo. He added that Sri Lankan students can now also participate in the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test to pursue medical education in India
Underlining the deep civilization and cultural ties between the two countries, Sandhu thanked Sri Lankan fans for supporting the Indian team in the finals of the Nidahas cricket tournament.
