Siri privacy bug on iOS 11 compromises your hidden notifications
23 Mar 2018

If you think iOS 11 is a mess, you're not alone. Apple's latest operating system has been bug-ridden since its launch. And keeping aside those battery draining issues and applications being unresponsive, iOS 11 bugs didn't even spare the $1,000 iPhone X.

The iOS 11 bug-saga continues as now an alarmingly serious privacy bug has surfaced which exposes users' hidden notifications, thanks to Siri.

Siri can read out hidden notifications, now even without permission
Privacy at stake

The newly discovered iOS 11 bug allows Siri to read aloud your hidden notifications, even if your phone is locked.

Ask Siri to read your notifications and it'll read out all your recent notifications even if you hide the preview.

Interestingly, the bug does not work for Apple's native messaging app, meaning your iMessages are safe.

Apple's privacy option goes haywire
Test it for yourself

iOS 11 allows a user to hide notification content, displaying just the sender's name and not the details. However, this privacy option is now thwarted because of this bug.

Test the bug for yourself: Go to Settings >Notifications >Select an app (say WhatsApp) >Show Previews >Select 'When Unlocked'.

Now have someone send you a WhatsApp text and then ask Siri to "read my notifications".

This bug particularly concerns all iPhone X owners
Fact

On the iPhone X, notification previews are hidden by default and details are shown only after Face ID authentication. So till this bug is active, Siri can read out all notifications on the iPhone X even without the owner's permission.
