Turkey's airstrikes kill 10 people in Syria's Afrin

(MENAFN) Three Turkish air strikes hit a checkpoint held by pro-Syrian-government troops on the road to Afrin in northwestern Syria on Wednesday, killing ten fighters, commander told Reuters.

The Shi'ite militias, which control the nearby villages of Nubl and Zahraa, recently assumed control of the position in agreement with the Kurdish YPG militia-the stated target of a Turkish offensive in the Afrin region, the commander said.

"The air strikes targeted a checkpoint on the only road leading from Afrin to regime-controlled territory to the southeast," the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.

The air strike also wounded two Kurdish fighters.

In January 2018, Turkey launched an offensive called "Olive Branch" on Syria's Afrin Kurds-majority, on the pretext of protecting its boarders from the People's Protection Units (YPG) which Ankara views as "terrorists."
