Doha: The Ambulatory Care Center (ACC) of Hamad Medical Corporation (HMC), a first of its kind facility in the country, offers patients a range of elective surgical procedures that require fewer hours of hospitalisation as well as limited inpatient care services. The Centre has seen 40,000 visits of OPD patients since its opening in May and has performed 900 surgeries since December.

The Centre offers outpatient services for several specialities and aims at maintaining a minimum waiting time for patients, said Dr Khalid Mohammed Al Jalham, Director of ACC addressing a media briefing yesterday.
Day care surgery, also known as same day surgery, is a model of care followed at ACC, that means patients can leave the hospital and return home within 23 hours of undergoing a surgical procedure.

'The ACC is a new concept in Qatar as well as in the region to build a full hospital with the concept of ambulatory care. It is making an impact in all aspects on our practices. Patients are provided with the opportunity to receive the latest treatment in different specialities using advanced clinical and surgical practices in a single dedicated location, he said.

'The patient care process is designed to produce the best possible clinical outcome, maximise access and increase convenience for our patients as well as offers as many treatments and procedures as possible on an ambulatory basis, he added.

ACC is equipped with 66 beds and 14 operating theaters and also houses a pre-assessment clinic where patients undergo a thorough medical evaluation to ensure readiness for surgery. Additionally, it offers outpatient services in urology, ENT (Ear, Nose Throat), podiatry and gastroenterology. Ophthalmology outpatient services are scheduled begin soon at ACC.

The facility, which specialises in outpatient care and day surgery, is conducting surgeries in specialities as urology, ophthalmology, ENT and paediatric dental.

'As we are a specialised hospital, we have a triage system and all patients are referred to ACC by private and public healthcare facilities across the country, said Al Jalham.

'In our outpatients, we saw 40,000 visits registered since the soft opening in May and have conducted 900 surgeries from the official opening in December. Since the soft opening, we have implemented a system that will reduce the multiple visits and waiting time of patients and the system has progressed well, he added.

Facilities at ACC includes 12 pre-operation beds, 54 beds in post-anaesthesia care unit as well as 32 beds for patients who need to stay less than 23 hours. But if needed, they will be sent to the inpatient care which is initially available for ENT and ophthalmology.
