Afghanistan- 15 Herat municipality employees face corruption charges


(MENAFN- Pajhwok Afghan News) HERAT CITY (Pajhwok): The Attorney General in western Herat province has detained more than a dozen municipality employees accused of corruption, an official said Saturday.

Herat City Mayor Syed Waheed Qatali told Pajhwok Afghan News the arrested individuals had been appointed at entrances to the city under previous leadership of the municipality to collect income taxes.

The Attorney Office was recently introduced 31 municipality employees accused of their involvement in corruption and of them more than 10 have been arrested.

Qatali said the suspects had been showing up to eight million afghanis a month collected at the city's entrances, but they collected 120 million afghanis in the past three months alone.

The suspects were arrested after the latest revenue report of the municipality was sent to higher authorities, the mayor said.

An official at the municipality, who wished not to be named, said raids to arrest the suspects started today and up to 15 individuals had been arrested so far.
