Oman- AFC Cup Group stage: Saham, Suwaiq suffer defeats to be eliminated

(MENAFN- Muscat Daily) Omani clubs, Saham and Al Suwaiq, lost their respective matches to Al Zawraa Club of Iraq and Al Muharraq of Bahrain by solitary goals last week to end their hopes of advancing to the next stage of the AFC Cup, the second-tier club competition in Asia.

Playing in their penultimate Group A match of the first round, Suwaiq lost at home to Zawraa as Hassan al Saadi's own goal got the visiting team the three points at the Sultan Qaboos Sports Complex (SQSC).

The third defeat in the group left Suwaiq with only two points from its five matches to stay at the bottom while Zawraa (11 points) and Syria's Al Jaish (9 pts) stayed in contention for a spot in the Zonal semifinals as only the group topper was assured of a spot in the last-four.

Suwaiq concludes its campaign against Jaish in Doha, Qatar on May 2.

At the Bahrain National Stadium, hosts Al Muharraq defeated Saham 1-0 to top Group B and remained in fray with Jordan's Al Wehdat (9 pts) while Lebanon's Nejmeh and Saham bowed out with four points each. Saham had one win, one draw and three losses in its campaign and will host Nejmeh in their concluding match at the SQSC on May 1.
