EU: racism, hate speech on rise

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) BRUSSELS, March 21 (KUNA) -- The European Union warned Tuesday that far from being eradicated, hate speech and other manifestations of racism, racial discrimination, xenophobia, are on the rise all over the world. EU High Representative Federica Mogherini in a Declaration to mark 'The International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination' noted that over the world men, women and children continue to suffer from racial discrimination on account of their colour, race, descent, caste, religion, and ethnic or national origin. "The elimination of racial discrimination is a global challenge and has to be tackled together by the whole international community, by international organizations and by the civil society," she said.

"We work to improve the understanding between communities and we address the concerns of affected groups, including the Jewish and the Muslim communities. We are seeking better integration of migrants," said the EU foreign policy chief.

"We are all responsible to protect, preserve and promote human rights, our own rights. Nobody will be respected if we won't all be respected as human beings, in our cultural richness, in our diversity," she added.

Meanwhile, the European Network Against Racism (ENAR) called on EU institutions to do more than just pay lip service to the fight against racial discrimination and be vocal against the normalization of racism.

"Numerous accounts of high-level European politicians and Members of European Parliament making racist statements are having a damaging impact on ethnic and religious minorities and polarising European society," said ENAR in a statement.

"Anti-racism organisations are beginning to question whether the EU is serious about tackling racism. Especially in the current context of xenophobic and hateful political discourses in many EU Member States, the EU must speak out publicly against instances of racist speech," it said.

The Brussels-based ENAR stands against racism and discrimination and advocates for equality and solidarity for all in Europe. (end) nk.gta
