Kuwait scales up diplomatic effort to alleviate Syrians' suffering

(MENAFN- Kuwait News Agency (KUNA)) KUWAIT, Oct 1 (KUNA) -- Kuwait has requested the Arab League and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to convene emergency meetings at the level of permanent delegates to discuss the deteriorating humanitarian situation in Syria, particularly in Aleppo.

The planned meetings fall in the framework of Kuwait's active lobbying for alleviating the suffering of the people of Syria, Deputy Foreign Minister Khaled Al-Jarallah announced on Saturday said in statements to Kuwait TV Saturday night.

"Everybody realizes the scale of the ordeal being undergone by the brotherly Syrian people for more than five years while the international community remained inactive and unable to put an end to this tragedy," he regretted.

"The city of Aleppo has been subject to a destructive air campaign which worsened the humanitarian disaster of its residents," Al-Jarallah pointed out.

The gravity of the disaster prompted Kuwait to scale up its diplomatic efforts and lobby for international response based on various considerations, foremost among which is the fact that the UN named His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah as Humanitarian Leader and Kuwait as Center of Humanitarian Action, he went on.

Kuwait's diplomatic move to request meetings by the Arab League and the OIC, which are two important international organizations, comes at the behest of the First Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Al-Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah, he added.

Al-Jarallah added that Kuwait will continue reaching out to the various international organizations and aid agencies in order to stop the bloodshed and destruction in Syria as early as possible.

Kuwait's permanent delegate to the Arab LeagueAhmad Abdul-Rahman Al-Baker told KUNA earlier today that he delivered a request in this regard to the League's Secretariat for holding an emergency meeting by the League's Council. (pickup previous) rg.gb
