(MENAFN Press) HE Sheikh Nahyan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister for Culture, Youth, and Social Development, praised UAE's efforts in supporting cancer patients, and making available the best and most scientifically advanced medical care to mitigate cancer's impact on patients, their families, and society.

Sheikh Nahyan also praised the distinctive efforts exerted by specialized cancer bodies and entities in this regard, particularly the Friends of Cancer Patients society

This came during His Highness's meeting with Cary Adams, CEO of the Union for International Cancer Control, who is heading a visiting UICC delegation to the UAE, with the goal to explore the latest advances in cancer technology to support cancer patients, and the efforts to create a unified UAE National Cancer Registry. His Highness welcomed the delegation at Abu Dhabi, in the presence of the Friends of Cancer Patients society

In addition to Mr. Adams, UICC's delegation consisted of Isabel Mestres, Head of External Relations and Business Development, Lorena Framis, External Relations and Business Development Manager and Dr Samia Al Amoudi, Professor at King Abdul Aziz University, Member of UICC's board of directors, and CEO of Sheikh Mohammed Hussein Al Amoudi Center of Excellence in Breast Cancer. The delegation was accompanied by Ameera Binkaram, President of the Board of Trustees and a founding member of the Friends of Cancer Patients society and Dr. Sawsan Al Madhi, Secretary General for Friends of Cancer Patients society

Speaking on the occasion, UICC CEO Cary Adams said: "We visited a number of medical facilities in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah, and were impressed by the latest developments on the long road ahead. We commend the efforts aimed at the creation of a unified UAE National Cancer Registry. A cancer registry is an absolute building block, as it helps to understand the exact nature of the burden of cancer, sheds light on the type of cancers that are emerging in specific areas or throughout the country and therefore enables in the development of counter-measures. At a later stage, a cancer registry will enable in measuring the impact of implementing policies.

The Union for International Cancer Control delegation also visited a number of important facilities, starting with Masdar, where they explored the latest projects in sustainability and clean energy. The delegation's visit to Masdar focused on the advanced technical labs, especially those specialized in optimum medical care in accordance with the most advanced international standards

The delegation also visited the University Hospital Sharjah where they explored the various medical facilities, and the newly established pediatrics cancer unit. It also visited the Clinical and Surgery Center, the Newborn Surgery Center, and the Medical Staff Training Center, which is one of the largest training centers in the Middle East. The delegation also visited other Sharjah University facilities, and met medical and managerial staff. The delegation expressed interest in the latest advances in medical care in the UAE, affirming that this would not be the last visit to the country. The delegation was welcomed by Dr. Abdelaziz Saeed Bin Butti Al Mheiri, Director of Sharjah Health Authority, and Member of the Board of Directors of University Hospital Sharjah, Prof. Hossam Hamdi, Vice Chancellor for Medical and Health Sciences Colleges at University Hospital Sharjah, and Prof. Hakam Yaseen, Medical Director at University Hospital Sharjah

The Union for International Cancer Control, headquartered in Geneva, was established in 1933, with the goal of enhancing cancer control. Over 760 organizations from 155 countries are UICC members. UICC launched the 'World Cancer Declaration Ambassadors Program', aiming at rallying support from international figures for its efforts to raise funds and achieve the Declaration's goals by 2020

About Friends of Cancer Patients
The Friends of Cancer Patients (FoCP) is a UAE based society providing its services across the United Arab Emirates to all residents of the country. FoCP was established in late 1999 in accordance with the directives and under the patronage of Her Highness Sheikha Jawaher Bint Mohammed Al Qasimi, Wife of the Ruler of Sharjah, Founder and Royal Patron of the Friends of Cancer Patients Society (FoCP), International Ambassador of the World Cancer Declaration for Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) and International Ambassador for Childhood Cancer for UICC.Being the leading cancer specific charity operating in the UAE, FoCP, an NGO and registered charity, has since its inception continuously delivered moral, financial, and clinical support to over 990 patients and their families, regardless of their nationality, gender, age, religion, or ethnicity. The primary focus is on promoting awareness around early detectable cancers within the UAE community. FoCP has also initiated numerous leading cancer focused awareness programmes targeting the community, which have become recognised locally, regionally, and internationally. FoCP is committed to helping cancer patients and their families get through the long and arduous journey of cancer treatment. Their motto is "We're with you". FoCP provides a broad spectrum of support including, covering treatment expenses for chemotherapy, radiation and other needed medications, in addition to expenses for investigative and surgical procedures. They also provide transportation and food allowances for underprivileged cancer patients, facilitate in sending patients abroad for treatment, provide prosthetic limbs, medical equipment, psychological and moral support for patients and their families. FoCP's volunteer team consists of businessmen and women, doctors, nurses, students, and the families of patients from various nationalities who have undertaken the responsibility of helping and supporting cancer patients. FoCP is constantly raising the bar and setting new targets to expand on its achievements to date and empower the community to change the cultural and social stigma associated with cancer.FoCP is a member and affiliate of a number of different organisations including, the Kuwait-based Gulf Federation for Cancer Control, the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC) based in Geneva Switzerland, and the US-Middle East Partnership for Breast Cancer Awareness and Research which is supported by the US Department of State's Middle East Partnership Initiative (MEPI). FoCP has garnered widespread recognition and awards from numerous leading institutions, locally, regionally, and internationally for FoCP leading role in helping cancer patients and creating awareness about the disease.
