EU Demands Israel Halt Lebanon Offensive
(MENAFN) The European Union on Monday issued a forceful call for Israel to immediately cease its military escalation in Lebanon and honor the country's sovereignty, as Brussels pledged deepening support for diplomatic efforts to restore lasting stability to the war-battered nation.
European Commission spokesperson Anouar El Anouni delivered the bloc's sharpest public rebuke yet at a media briefing, leaving little ambiguity about Brussels' position.
"We call on Israel to stop its military escalation in Lebanon and to respect Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity," he said.
El Anouni also threw the EU's weight behind continued diplomatic engagement led by Washington and other international partners, urging a negotiated road map toward durable regional stability.
The spokesperson's remarks carried a pointed humanitarian dimension, casting Lebanon's civilian population as innocent victims of a conflict not of their making.
"The people of Lebanon have already endured immense hardship. They didn't choose this war, and this war is not theirs," he said.
He further asserted that civilians on both sides of the border — in Lebanon and Israel alike — hold an inviolable right to live free from fear, in conditions of peace, security, and dignity.
Brussels Weighs New Security Mission for Lebanon
Beyond diplomatic pressure, El Anouni signaled that the EU is actively exploring concrete security measures to reinforce stability on the ground, including a potential new mission designed to strengthen Lebanese state authority. He declined to elaborate on the specifics, but left no doubt about the bloc's long-term commitment.
He stressed that the EU's dedication to Lebanon's security and stability "remains unwavering," and confirmed that Brussels will continue channeling solidarity, support, and emergency assistance to help Lebanese authorities navigate the deepening crisis.
Israel's current offensive in Lebanon was launched in March, in the aftermath of Hezbollah's retaliatory strikes following the U.S.-Israeli military campaign against Iran.
