Ireland Condemns Treatment of Detained Global Sumud Flotilla Activists

(MENAFN) Ireland has expressed strong concern over video footage appearing to show the treatment of detained activists from the Global Sumud Flotilla, with senior officials warning that the conduct could violate international law.

The Irish taoiseach (prime minister), Micheál Martin, said on Wednesday that he was “appalled” by what he described as the treatment of detained flotilla members, following the circulation of footage involving Israeli authorities. Writing on the US social media platform X, he referred to “shocking behaviour” by Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and said it represents a breach of international law, according to reports.

He added that he intends to raise the issue at the European Union level and stressed that the actions attributed to the Israeli government fall outside accepted legal standards.

Earlier, Ireland’s foreign minister Helen McEntee also commented on the same footage, expressing concern over material circulated by Israeli officials. She said that detained Global Sumud Flotilla participants “are not in any way being treated with appropriate dignity or respect.”

McEntee further noted that Ireland’s embassy in Israel has sought urgent assurances regarding the safety and welfare of Irish citizens involved, insisting they must receive full protections guaranteed under international law.
