UAE Demands Iraq Cease Drone Strikes on Barakah Nuclear Plant

(MENAFN) The United Arab Emirates issued a sharp warning to Baghdad on Wednesday, calling on the Iraqi government to stop "all hostile acts" launched from its soil "urgently and without condition" in the wake of a weekend drone strike targeting the Barakah nuclear power plant.

The UAE Foreign Ministry expressed its "strong condemnation and absolute rejection" of what it termed "criminal terrorist attacks launched from Iraqi territory" against critical civilian infrastructure across Gulf Cooperation Council member states.

Abu Dhabi characterized the strikes as "a blatant violation" of UAE sovereignty and airspace, as well as a breach of international law and the UN Charter, demanding "immediate and responsible" action to neutralize such threats "in line with international and regional obligations."

The ministry stopped short of issuing direct threats but underscored Iraq's responsibility in upholding regional security and preserving its standing as an active and credible regional partner. Baghdad had not responded to the UAE statement at the time of publication.

Weekend Strike Targeted Nuclear Facility
The Abu Dhabi Media Office disclosed Sunday that local authorities had contained a fire that erupted in an electricity generator located outside the internal perimeter of the Barakah nuclear power plant in the Al Dhafra region. On Tuesday, the Iraqi government issued its own statement condemning the drone attacks against the "brotherly" nation UAE — though it stopped short of identifying those responsible.

Regional tensions have remained elevated since the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran on February 28, triggering retaliatory attacks by Tehran against Israel and US allies across the Gulf, along with the closure of the Strait of Hormuz.
