UN Chief Condemns Israeli Military Move at UNRWA Site in East Jerusalem
(MENAFN) The UN Secretary-General has issued a strong condemnation of Israel’s decision to establish military facilities at a UN Relief and Works Agency compound in occupied East Jerusalem, describing the move as unacceptable and in violation of international obligations.
According to a statement from the UN spokesperson, the Secretary-General strongly denounced the establishment of military infrastructure at the UNRWA Sheikh Jarrah compound, which had previously been seized earlier in the year. The statement stressed that the site remains United Nations property and that any military use of it constitutes a breach of its protected status.
The UN emphasized that UNRWA is an essential part of the UN system and that its premises are legally inviolable. It warned that the actions undermine the agency’s ability to operate in the occupied Palestinian territory, including East Jerusalem, and represent a serious violation of the privileges and immunities granted to UN institutions.
The statement further described the developments as unacceptable escalation, expressing regret that the relevant authorities continue to take steps considered inconsistent with their international obligations. It also referenced legal interpretations affirming that such actions are unlawful and reiterated that the presence in the occupied territory should end without delay.
The Secretary-General urged authorities to reverse the decision and restore full control of the compound to the United Nations immediately, reaffirming the need to respect the integrity of UN facilities and operations.
