Canada Demands Protection for Citizens After Gaza Flotilla Detentions

(MENAFN) Canada has called on Israel to guarantee the “safety and security” of Canadian citizens following reports concerning the treatment of activists aboard a flotilla bound for Gaza. The Canadian prime minister condemned what he described as unacceptable conduct toward civilians involved in the maritime convoy.

In comments posted on the US social media platform X, he said the reported treatment of detainees, including footage circulated by an Israeli official, was “abominable” and “unacceptable.” He emphasized that Canadian authorities are seeking formal assurances regarding the well-being of nationals involved in the incident, following diplomatic action that included summoning Israel’s ambassador in Ottawa.

He also noted that Canada has previously imposed sanctions on an Israeli official, including travel restrictions and asset freezes, citing repeated incitement of violence. He stressed that civilian protection and respect for human dignity must be maintained universally and without exception.

The statements came after footage appeared to show activists restrained and forced to kneel after being detained by Israeli forces in international waters during an interception of a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla.

According to reports from the aid organizers, all vessels participating in the convoy were seized during the operation.
