US Seizes Iranian Tanker in Gulf of Oman, Then Releases It After Search
(MENAFN) US military personnel boarded an Iranian-flagged commercial oil tanker in the Gulf of Oman on Wednesday as part of what officials described as ongoing maritime enforcement operations linked to a US blockade, according to reports.
United States Central Command said that Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit carried out the boarding of the tanker M/T Celestial Sea, which was suspected of attempting to violate the blockade while heading toward an Iranian port.
The command stated in a social media post that "Earlier today in the Gulf of Oman, U.S. Marines from the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit boarded M/T Celestial Sea, an Iranian-flagged commercial oil tanker suspected of attempting to violate the U.S. blockade by transiting toward an Iranian port," according to reports.
Officials said the vessel was searched by US forces and the crew was instructed to change course before the tanker was ultimately released.
US Central Command also said enforcement operations remain ongoing and that maritime traffic is being actively redirected to ensure compliance. It stated, "U.S. forces continue to fully enforce the blockade and have now redirected 91 commercial ships to ensure compliance," according to reports.
