Germany to Deploy Patriot Air Defense Unit to Türkiye

(MENAFN) Germany is set to dispatch a Patriot air defense unit to Türkiye in the coming weeks, officials confirmed on Monday, as part of a NATO initiative aimed at reinforcing security along the alliance’s southeastern border.

The German armed forces, known as the Bundeswehr, will establish a Patriot “Air and Missile Defense Task Force,” which will cooperate closely with the Turkish military, according to a statement from the German Defense Ministry.

“Germany is taking on more responsibility within NATO,” Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said, noting that the German Patriot unit along with roughly 150 soldiers will replace a US unit that is currently stationed in Türkiye.

“Our air force is doing great, internationally respected work,” Pistorius said. Referring to earlier missions, he added: “With their professionalism they will make an important contribution to protecting NATO airspace.”

The ministry further explained that the German Patriot unit will be deployed under NATO’s Integrated Air and Missile Defense (NATO IAMD) structure. According to present plans, the operation is expected to run from June until September 2026.
