S. Korea Says to Continue Strengthening Alliance with U.S.

(MENAFN) South Korea has reaffirmed its commitment to deepening its alliance with Washington, as its top diplomat moved to counter mounting concerns over growing strains in the bilateral relationship.

Foreign Minister Cho Hyun delivered a keynote address before the National Assembly in Seoul on Wednesday, asserting that the partnership with the United States remains the cornerstone of the country's foreign and security policy, according to a news agency.

"While there have been various speculations and concerns over South Korea-U.S. relations in recent months, I believe they stem from a deep sense of concern and attachment to the alliance," Cho said.

The minister underscored the urgency of maintaining "close and frequent communication" to work through unresolved issues, adding that mutual respect would serve as the foundation for reinforcing trust between Seoul and Washington.

Tensions between the two allies have become increasingly visible in recent months. Washington moved to restrict intelligence sharing on North Korea following an alleged leak, while a separate dispute emerged over Seoul's investigation into e-commerce giant Coupang, further straining diplomatic relations.

Cho outlined Seoul's ambitions to assume a more assertive role in peninsular defense, pointing to plans to develop advanced military capabilities — including nuclear-powered submarines — and to pursue the transfer of wartime operational control.

Looking beyond the bilateral framework, the minister signaled South Korea's intent to expand trilateral cooperation with the US and Japan, while continuing engagement with China and other regional partners. On the economic front, Seoul is seeking entry into the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) as part of a broader strategy to hedge against trade volatility and diversify its market reach.

Addressing the North Korean threat, Cho advocated for a phased diplomatic approach aimed at gradually dismantling Pyongyang's nuclear and ballistic missile programs through structured dialogue.
