Starmer Signals Growing Strain in Western Alliances

(MENAFN) UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer has acknowledged increasing friction among Western allies following repeated disagreements with US President Donald Trump over the conflict involving Iran.

Speaking at the European Political Community summit in Yerevan, Starmer noted that divisions within allied nations are becoming more visible. He stated that “there is more tension in the alliances than there should be and it’s very important that we therefore face up to this as a group of countries together.”

Although he did not directly attribute the cause of these tensions, his remarks come as relations between London and Washington appear to be deteriorating. Earlier in the year, Trump suggested that the long-standing US-UK “special relationship” had weakened, describing it as “obviously not what it was” and criticizing Starmer as “no Winston Churchill” after the UK declined to participate in a US-led military campaign against Iran.

Starmer, for his part, expressed frustration over the economic consequences linked to the conflict, particularly rising fuel and consumer costs. He indicated that he was “fed up” with the situation.

Tensions were further fueled when Trump criticized Starmer’s visit to Beijing in January—his first official trip there since taking office—which led to several trade agreements. Trump labeled the visit “very dangerous,” according to reports.

Despite these disagreements, Starmer urged European nations to boost defense spending within NATO, aligning with a position long advocated by Trump. He emphasized, “I feel very strongly that the European countries now need to step up and do more on defense and security to have a stronger European element of NATO,” while also stressing that the UK continues to cooperate “very closely with the US on all issues to do with defense and security.”

He further highlighted that strengthening ties with Europe serves the UK’s “national interest.” However, he declined to address claims, mentioned in reports, that the European Union is seeking approximately £1 billion annually from the UK in exchange for broader trade arrangements.

These claims have sparked criticism domestically. Priti Patel accused Starmer of “unpicking Brexit and planning another undemocratic hit job on British taxpayers,” reflecting growing political pushback at home.
