Trump Declares End of Hostilities with Iran in Message to Congress
(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has notified Congress that active fighting with Iran has come to an end following a ceasefire that has remained in place since early April, according to reports.
In written messages addressed to House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senator Chuck Grassley, Trump outlined the timeline of the halt in military activity.
"On April 7, 2026, I ordered a 2-week ceasefire. The ceasefire has since been extended. There has been no exchange of fire between United States Forces and Iran since April 7, 2026.
"The hostilities that began on February 28, 2026, have terminated," Trump wrote.
The announcement comes as the 60-day period since the initial notification of military action concludes, a deadline tied to requirements under the War Powers Act of 1973, which obliges the president to obtain congressional approval to continue combat operations beyond that timeframe.
Despite the cessation of direct clashes, Trump cautioned that Iran still represents a notable risk to US personnel and interests.
"Accordingly, the Department of War continues to update its force posture in the AoR (area of responsibility) in select countries, as necessary and appropriate, to address Iranian and Iranian proxy forces’ threats and to protect the United States and its allies and partners.
"These changes are more fully outlined in the classified attachment to this letter," he said.
The confrontation initially erupted on Feb. 28, when the US and Israel launched strikes against Iran, prompting countermeasures from Tehran targeting US allies in the Gulf region and contributing to the shutdown of the Strait of Hormuz.
