UK Ends Unit Monitoring Alleged Violations in Gaza

(MENAFN) The UK Foreign Office has reportedly shut down a specialized unit responsible for tracking alleged breaches of international law related to Israel’s actions in Gaza, according to reports.

The closure comes despite earlier remarks by Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper, who had described support for international law as a “core British value” and a key priority for the department.

According to the report, the move includes the termination of the International Humanitarian Law (IHL) cell and the withdrawal of funding for the Conflict and Security Monitoring Project, an initiative run by the Center for Information Resilience.

Officials have reportedly raised concerns that the decision will result in the loss of access to a database containing around 26,000 documented incidents attributed to Israel. The dataset, which includes events following the escalation in Gaza in October 2023, is considered one of the largest collections of its kind.

The information had reportedly been used by UK authorities to inform decisions on whether to approve or suspend arms export licenses to Israel.

Reports suggest the shutdown is linked to a broader government decision to reduce overseas aid spending to 0.3% of GDP.

Critics have voiced concern over the move. Katie Fallon, advocacy manager at Campaign Against Arms Trade, said the decision was intended to “obscure unimaginable violations and crimes committed against the most vulnerable people in conflict and sustain arms sales at any cost.”
