Japan Seeks Stronger Saudi Energy Cooperation Amid Regional Tensions
(MENAFN) According to reports, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi has called on Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman to enhance cooperation in expanding energy supplies to Japan.
During a telephone conversation, Takaichi expressed appreciation for Saudi Arabia’s continued crude oil exports to Japan via Yanbu Port and requested further cooperation to strengthen energy supply stability, according to a statement from Japan’s Foreign Ministry.
She also emphasized the importance of upholding the US-Iran ceasefire, urging rapid de-escalation of regional tensions and the protection of safe maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz.
Takaichi further stated that it is crucial for the United States and Iran to continue negotiations aimed at reaching a final agreement, and she expressed support for ongoing diplomatic mediation efforts by involved countries. She added that Japan will continue coordinating with Saudi Arabia and the broader international community to support diplomatic solutions.
In response, Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman indicated that Saudi Arabia is prepared to respond positively in order to ensure stable energy supplies to global markets, including Japan.
Shipping through the Strait of Hormuz has faced significant disruption since the outbreak of conflict between the US and Iran on February 28, contributing to instability in global energy markets and raising concerns over prolonged economic impact. A ceasefire brokered by Pakistan is currently in place, while further talks are expected in an effort to achieve a lasting resolution.
