The Ministry of Environment and Climate Change (MoECC)'s Marine Protection Department has reported the death of a sea turtle, which was entangled in abandoned fishing nets left in the open waters for an extended period, leading to its suffocation.

The incident highlights the serious environmental risks posed by neglected fishing gear, which the ministry identified as a direct threat to marine life, particularly to endangered species.

The MoECC further stressed that abandoned fishing equipment can cause significant harm to the marine ecosystem, disrupting natural habitats and increasing mortality among marine organisms.

The ministry has called on fishermen and sea users to adhere to sustainable practices, specifically urging them not to leave fishing equipment in the water.
