Security Council Denounces Strikes on UN Peacekeepers in Lebanon
(MENAFN) The UN Security Council on Wednesday strongly criticized Israeli attacks targeting the UN Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) in late March, which resulted in the killing of three peacekeepers from Indonesia.
In an official declaration, council members conveyed their heartfelt condolences and compassion to the victims’ families, as well as to Indonesia. They also highlighted that five additional individuals were wounded during the assaults, noting a pattern of incidents impacting UNIFIL sites. These events occurred "against the backdrop of ongoing hostilities along the Blue Line."
"They wished a speedy and full recovery to those who were injured. They paid tribute to the dedication and service of all United Nations peacekeepers who risk their lives in the cause of international peace and security and expressed their deep appreciation to UNIFIL’s troop-contributing countries," the statement added.
Furthermore, the council reiterated its unwavering backing for UNIFIL and urged all involved parties to ensure the protection and safety of its staff, infrastructure, and operational mobility in line with international law. It also called for avoiding any actions that might endanger peacekeeping personnel.
Additionally, the council underscored that peacekeepers must never be targeted and encouraged the United Nations to carry out a thorough investigation into the incidents via UNIFIL, while keeping the contributing nation informed, in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions.
