Eurozone Unemployment Rate Edges Higher in February
(MENAFN) The eurozone's unemployment rate edged higher in February, rising to 6.2% from 6.1% the previous month, according to fresh official figures released Wednesday by Eurostat — though the reading still marks an improvement from the 6.3% recorded in February 2025.
Across the broader European Union, the jobless rate held steady at 5.9% in February, unchanged from January, and slightly below the 6% logged in the same month a year earlier, Eurostat data showed.
The human toll behind the figures is stark: an estimated 13.1 million people across the EU remained out of work as of February, with 10.9 million of those concentrated in the eurozone alone. Month-on-month, the number of unemployed individuals swelled by 137,000 across the EU and by 93,000 within the euro area — a sign that labor market momentum, while still broadly intact, is beginning to show early cracks.
Youth unemployment continued to cast a long shadow over the region's economic outlook. Workers under the age of 25 faced a jobless rate of 15.3% across the EU and 14.9% in the eurozone during February, underscoring the persistent difficulty young people face in securing footholds in the bloc's labor markets.
The data arrives at a delicate moment for the European economy, as policymakers navigate slowing growth, shifting monetary conditions, and the inflationary pressures unleashed by the ongoing Middle East energy crisis.
