Spanish PM Says Iran War Could Surpass Iraq War

(MENAFN) Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez has warned that the ongoing US-Israeli conflict in Iran could have consequences “much worse” than the 2003 US-led invasion of Iraq, while reiterating that Spain will not participate.

Speaking to the lower house of parliament, Sanchez described the war as an “absolute disaster,” stating that it has “undermined international law and destabilized the Middle East.” He added that the conflict has reignited tensions in Iraq and Lebanon, increased insecurity in Gulf nations, and worsened global energy challenges.

“We are not facing the same scenario as in the illegal war in Iraq,” Sanchez said. “We are facing something much worse, with a far broader and deeper impact.” He criticized the 2003 government of then-Prime Minister Jose Maria Aznar for supporting the invasion and sending Spanish troops to Iraq.

“We say no to repeating the mistakes of the past; we say no to dressing up as democracy, which is in reality greed and political calculation,” Sanchez said. “In short, we say no to war.”

Sanchez highlighted Iran’s size, noting that it exceeds Germany, France, and Italy combined, and emphasized its substantial military capabilities, including long-range ballistic missiles. He pointed to decades of defense development since the 1979 establishment of the Islamic Republic.

Warning of economic consequences, Sanchez stated: “This war is a huge mistake whose costs we neither accept nor are willing to pay.” He also mentioned that the government recently approved a €5 billion package to support Spanish households.

Spain has been one of the EU’s most vocal opponents of the conflict, having withdrawn its ambassador from Israel and downgraded diplomatic relations, according to reports.
