São Paulo Daily Brief For Friday, March 13, 2026
Friday is the best evening of the week for the MASP - free admission from 18h gives three hours with the Histórias Latino-Americanas exhibitions without the R$85 entry. The Pinacoteca's Tayou show, now one week into its run, continues to draw strong crowds across the Pina Luz galleries; Friday allows a quieter visit than last weekend's opening. At IMS Paulista, the Agnès Varda photography and cinema exhibition continues - and next Tuesday brings a major new opening: O que elas viram, a 106-book fotolivros show curated with 10x10 Photobooks. HIP-HOP 80sp at Sesc 24 de Maio has two weeks left. The cultural weekend builds further: tomorrow is free Saturday at the Pinacoteca.

Clara Ianni Sala de Vídeo - closing March 23: The MASP video room installation has 10 days left.
IPCA and markets: February's IPCA came in at 0.70% - above the 0.65% consensus - reigniting inflation concern ahead of the Copom meeting on March 17–18. The Ibovespa fell 2.55% to 179,284 on Thursday, wiping out three days of gains. The dollar climbed to approximately R$5.24. Brent surpassed US$100 after Iran's new Supreme Leader, Mojtaba Khamenei, declared the Strait of Ormuz should remain closed. The government responded by zeroing PIS/Cofins on diesel to contain fuel price pass-through.
Lollapalooza Brasil 2026 - March 20–22, Autódromo de Interlagos: One week away. Transport planning for the southern zone begins next week.
Emergency: SAMU 192, Polícia Militar 190, Bombeiros 193. Hospital das Clínicas (Cerqueira César), Hospital São Paulo (Vila Clementino).
07Community & LifestyleLocal lifeRoger Machado's winning debut. São Paulo beat Chapecoense 2–0 at the Canindé on Thursday night - Roger Machado's first match as Tricolor manager. The result lifts São Paulo to 12 points, near the top of the table. The next test: Red Bull Bragantino away this weekend.
Lingard, the upset, and what's next. Wednesday night at the Neo Química Arena was meant to celebrate - Jesse Lingard was presented to the Fiel at halftime. Instead, Coritiba won 2–0 and Corinthians dropped to mid-table. The Timão travel to Santos on Saturday for the clássico paulista in what is now a must-win fixture.
The first weekend Brasileirão. Rounds 1–5 were all played midweek around the state championship schedule. Round 6 is the first on Saturday and Sunday - Santos v Corinthians headlines on Saturday, with Palmeiras hosting Mirassol on Sunday at 18h30 at the Allianz Parque. After a disappointing 2–1 loss at Vasco on Thursday, Abel Ferreira's side needs a response at home.
08Game DayGame dayBrasileirão Round 5 - Final results: Wednesday: Flamengo 2–0 Cruzeiro, Atlético-MG 1–0 Internacional, Bahia v Vitória, Corinthians 0–2 Coritiba. Thursday: Remo 0–2 Fluminense, Vasco 2–1 Palmeiras, São Paulo 2–0 Chapecoense (Roger Machado debut), Grêmio 1–1 Bragantino. Athletico-PR v Botafogo postponed to March 29.
Brasileirão Round 6 - This weekend: Saturday March 14: Santos v Corinthians (Vila Belmiro), Botafogo v Flamengo (20h30, Rio). Sunday March 15: Red Bull Bragantino v São Paulo, Palmeiras v Mirassol (18h30, Allianz Parque), Fluminense v Athletico-PR (16h, Rio), Cruzeiro v Vasco (20h30). Monday March 16: Chapecoense v Grêmio (20h).
Allianz Parque access (Sunday): Metrô Line 3 (Red) to Palmeiras-Barra Funda. The stadium is a 10-minute walk from the station. Congestion on Marginal Tietê from 16h. Post-match trains run approximately 30 minutes after the whistle.
09Business & MarketsMarket watchIbovespa: Fell 2.55% on Thursday to 179,284 points, wiping out the gains from Monday through Wednesday. The index hit a session low of 178,495. Volume surged to R$35.5 billion - well above average - as global risk aversion intensified. The selloff was triggered by the new Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei declaring the Strait of Ormuz should remain closed as a pressure tool, reversing earlier optimism about a swift resolution.
Dollar: Rose to approximately R$5.24 on Thursday, climbing alongside other emerging-market currencies as oil volatility and the IPCA surprise drove safe-haven flows.
Selic: 15.00% (current rate). The Copom meets March 17–18 and had signalled the start of a cutting cycle. However, Thursday's IPCA print - February at 0.70%, above the 0.65% consensus, with the 12-month rate at 3.81% - complicates the picture. A 25bp cut remains the base case but the size and forward guidance are now uncertain. The inflation target is 3.0% with a 1.5pp tolerance band.
Oil: Brent surged 9.21% to close at US$100.46 on Thursday. WTI settled at US$95.73 (+9.74%). The spike followed Khamenei's declaration that Ormuz should stay closed. The Brazilian government responded by zeroing PIS/Cofins on diesel prices to limit pass-through to consumers. Petrobras has still not adjusted domestic fuel prices despite the widening gap with international benchmarks.
Context: Thursday reversed the cautious relief rally of the prior three sessions. The IPCA above consensus adds domestic pressure to an already volatile external picture. Markets face a weekend of uncertainty: the Copom in four days must weigh oil at US$100, above-target inflation, and a currency that weakened sharply in a single session. Friday's session will be closely watched for whether the selloff extends or finds support near the 178,500 area tested on Thursday.
