Turkish KIZILELMA drones complete first autonomous formation flight
(MENAFN) Baykar, a Turkish defense company, announced on Sunday that two prototypes of its Bayraktar KIZILELMA unmanned combat aircraft successfully completed the world’s first fully autonomous close-formation flight for jet-powered drones.
The test, part of ongoing evaluations at the AKINCI Flight Training and Test Center in Corlu, northwestern Türkiye, demonstrated KIZILELMA’s smart fleet autonomy capabilities. Once airborne, the third and fifth prototypes, PT3 and PT5, carried out synchronized maneuvers and maintained a close formation entirely autonomously, without human control, enabled by smart fleet autonomy algorithms developed by Baykar’s engineers.
“This achievement enables multiple unmanned platforms, under the command of a leader, to autonomously adjust their relative positions and carry out joint missions,” according to reports.
During the test, the drones also conducted a Combat Air Patrol (CAP) mission. The patrol flights, guided by fleet autonomy software along designated routes, verified the feasibility of performing air defense missions autonomously. KIZILELMA fleets could, in the future, conduct patrol and interception operations typically carried out by manned fighter jets.
The development underscores Baykar’s ability to perform coordinated operations with multiple unmanned platforms, leveraging the company’s smart fleet autonomy infrastructure. The aircraft had previously made history on November 29 off Sinop’s coast, achieving a direct hit on a jet-powered target using a GOKDOGAN missile developed by TUBITAK SAGE, guided by the ASELSAN MURAD AESA radar. This marked the first time a combat UAV destroyed a jet-powered aerial target with a beyond-visual-range air-to-air missile.
Baykar, a leading global UAV exporter, has signed export agreements with 37 countries, including 36 for Bayraktar TB2 drones and 16 for Bayraktar Akinci UAVs.
In a statement on the Turkish social platform NSosyal, Baykar Chair Selcuk Bayraktar said, "World's first! Two Unmanned Fighter Aircraft have successfully performed autonomous close-formation flight."
Baykar General Manager Haluk Bayraktar also highlighted the company’s innovation: "Not copying, but inventing; not imitating, but being followed…”
