Sierra Leone Announces End of Mpox Outbreak
(MENAFN) Sierra Leone has officially announced the conclusion of its mpox outbreak, health authorities confirmed Tuesday.
The announcement meets global health protocols mandating a minimum 42-day period without any newly confirmed infections, Health Minister Austin Demby revealed during a commemorative event celebrating the National Public Health Agency's (NPHA) two-year milestone.
Each of the 16 districts that documented infections has now exceeded the mandatory 42-day threshold, with multiple regions recording more than 150 days since their most recent case.
Beginning with its initial mpox detection on Jan. 9, Sierra Leone has documented 5,442 confirmed infections, resulting in 60 fatalities.
Foday Sahr, executive director of the NPHA, emphasized that the agency's creation represents Sierra Leone's determination to never again confront health crises without adequate preparation.
The commemoration ceremony attracted praise from international health authorities, including Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director-general of the World Health Organization, and Jean Kaseya, director-general of the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, who commended Sierra Leone's successful response to public health challenges.
