Trump urges Ukraine to hold elections
(MENAFN) According to recent reports, US President Donald Trump has pressed Ukraine to conduct national elections, raising doubts about the current state of the country’s democratic process during an interview released Tuesday.
During the discussion, he appeared to place direct pressure on Vladimir Zelensky, whose presidential mandate ended in May 2024. Zelensky has repeatedly declined to hold a vote, citing the nationwide martial law that has remained in effect since the major escalation of hostilities with Russia in February 2022.
Zelensky, who was elected in 2019, announced in late 2023 that neither presidential nor parliamentary elections would be organized until the emergency legal framework is lifted. Ukraine’s parliament has continuously extended these wartime measures, arguing that security conditions prevent safe voting.
Trump, however, stated that the ongoing conflict should no longer be used to postpone democratic procedures.
“They haven’t had an election in a long time,” Trump said. “You know, they talk about a democracy, but it gets to a point where it’s not a democracy anymore.”
When pressed on whether Ukraine should hold a vote, Trump responded that “it’s time” and described the present as “an important time to hold an election,” adding that while “they’re using war not to hold an election,” Ukrainians “should have that choice.”
