SKIMS Launches DNB Cardiac Anesthesia Programme
Director SKIMS, Dr. Mohammad Ashraf Ganie
Srinagar ~ The Sher-i-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences (SKIMS) has introduced Jammu & Kashmir's first DNB Cardiac Anaesthesia programme, marking a major academic and healthcare milestone for the Union Territory.
The newly launched three-year super-speciality course-equivalent to the national DM Cardiac Anaesthesia programme-positions SKIMS as the only institution in J&K offering advanced training in cardiothoracic anaesthesia. The institute, already recognised for managing some of the region's most complex and high-risk medical cases, described the development as a step toward strengthening specialised cardiac care and expanding academic capacity.
What the Programme Offers
ADVERTISEMENTThe DNB Cardiac Anaesthesia programme is designed to train specialists in the full range of cardiothoracic and vascular anaesthesia. Trainees will gain hands-on experience across:
- Cardiothoracic operating theatres Cardiac ICUs and high-dependency units Cardiac catheterisation laboratories Interventional cardiology suites Non-operating room cardiac procedures
The curriculum emphasises haemodynamic management, transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), perioperative cardiac optimisation, postoperative critical care, and the use of mechanical circulatory support-skills considered essential in modern cardiac anaesthesia practice.
Leadership Welcomes the Milestone
Congratulating the SKIMS University on achieving this milestone, Director SKIMS and Ex-Officio Secretary to the Government, Prof. Mohammad Ashraf Ganie, said the programme would significantly strengthen subspeciality cardiac services in the region. He lauded the coordinated effort behind the programme's approval and accreditation.
