Zelensky says nation to decide on next step based on Geneva talks
(MENAFN) Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Monday that he expects a comprehensive update from Kyiv’s delegation on the Geneva discussions with US officials “within the next hour,” noting that Ukraine will outline its upcoming steps after reviewing the results and continuing coordination with European partners, according to reports.
Writing on Telegram, Zelenskyy said he had spoken by phone with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, with both leaders discussing ongoing diplomatic efforts as Ukraine’s team “returns home” from the talks in Switzerland.
He later announced another call—this time with Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, who is in Angola for the EU-African Union Summit—during which he briefed him on the Geneva meetings and their early takeaways.
“Ukraine is receiving significant attention there, and I am grateful for this support,” Zelenskyy said, noting that the participation of additional European leaders in discussions with the American side is “important” as broader security decisions take shape.
“Our delegation is now returning home, and I am expecting a full report … on the progress of the talks in Geneva and the principal emphases of our partners,” he said.
“Based on these reports, we will determine the next steps and the timing. We will continue coordinating with Europe and other partners around the world.”
His remarks come as top US and Ukrainian officials held negotiations in Geneva on a US proposal aimed at advancing peace efforts in Ukraine. The exchanges involved a US team led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff, along with a Ukrainian delegation headed by presidential chief of staff Andriy Yermak.
Following Sunday’s sessions, both sides produced an “updated and refined” peace plan, with their joint statement saying the discussions showed “meaningful progress toward aligning positions and identifying clear next steps.”
