(MENAFN) Türkiye’s role as host of the 2026 United Nations Climate Change Conference, widely recognized as "COP31," carries great importance not only for international recognition but also for asserting a key position in climate diplomacy.

The Conference of the Parties, or COP, is the yearly assembly of the 197 nations that are parties to the "UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC)," where global agreements are reached on critical issues such as greenhouse gas reduction goals and the regulations governing carbon markets.

These meetings also play a central role in shaping the roadmap for the implementation of the "Paris Agreement," with decisions made at COP directly affecting the climate policies of participating countries.

In this context, Anadolu has outlined the process through five questions, covering everything from the functioning of the COP to the obligations and responsibilities that come with hosting it.
As the "highest decision-making body" of the UNFCCC, COP convenes annually. During these gatherings, representatives from all 197 member nations assess progress and negotiate collective strategies to address climate change.

Discussions cover key topics such as greenhouse gas mitigation, adaptation strategies, climate finance, mechanisms for loss and damage, and carbon market regulations.

Ultimately, COP meetings also establish the rules essential for implementing the "Paris Agreement," reinforcing their critical influence on global climate action.
