Poland Moves to Distance Russian Embassy
(MENAFN) The lower chamber of the Polish parliament has approved a resolution urging the relocation of the Russian Embassy in Warsaw to a site farther from the Defense Ministry, citing security risks.
The Sejm passed the resolution on Friday with the support of 439 legislators, while one member abstained.
The text emphasizes the “urgent need to secure the area around the Ministry of National Defense.”
Although the resolution does not carry legal force, it holds considerable symbolic significance.
Currently, the Russian diplomatic compound in Warsaw sits adjacent to the Polish Defense Ministry headquarters and is also near Belweder Palace, one of the official residences of the Polish president, as well as the prime minister’s office.
Earlier in the week, Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski announced to parliament that Poland would shut down its last remaining Russian consulate, located in Gdansk.
In response to Warsaw’s decision, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova stated that Moscow would reciprocate the move by reducing “Poland’s diplomatic-consular presence in Russia.”
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters that “relations with Poland have completely deteriorated,” highlighting that Warsaw’s apparent aim to “reduce to zero any possibility of consular or diplomatic relations” reflects the severe state of bilateral ties.
