Pope makes surprise appearance via video at rave in Slovakia
(MENAFN) Pope Leo XIV made a surprise video appearance at a rave in Slovakia, offering his blessing to young attendees during a DJ performance.
The event took place outside the 14th-century St. Elizabeth Cathedral in Kosice, celebrating the 75th birthday of Archbishop Bernard Bober. The party featured a concert-style setup with lasers, smoke, projection screens, and a DJ booth. The set was performed by Padre Guilherme, also known as the “DJ priest,” who tours internationally with electronic shows blending techno, sacred, and folk music elements.
Although the celebration occurred on November 8, the Pope’s message gained widespread attention over the weekend after Padre Guilherme shared the video on social media with the caption: “Electronic music, faith and Pope Leo XIV message.”
The footage shows the Pope appearing via projection on the cathedral walls as Padre Guilherme performed his unreleased single “Dear Young People” from his upcoming EP, Integral Ecology. Lasers, spotlights, and projection mapping illuminated the cathedral as the pontiff addressed the crowd:
“With joy I greet you as you gather before the splendid cathedral of Kosice, which is a beating heart of faith and hope,” he said.
Born Robert Francis Prevost in Chicago, Pope Leo XIV became the 267th head of the Catholic Church earlier this year, becoming the first American pope. From the start of his papacy, he has emphasized cultural engagement and exploring new ways to promote religious values through the arts.
In a widely shared post on Letterboxd, he listed his four favorite films—The Sound of Music, It’s a Wonderful Life, Ordinary People, and Life is Beautiful—which he said “reflect the best of the human spirit.”
