Trump signs bill to release Epstein files

(MENAFN) US President Donald Trump has signed legislation requiring the Justice Department to release investigative records related to disgraced financier Jeffrey Epstein, according to reports. The move comes after Trump initially opposed the measure, claiming Democrats were using the Epstein case to attack him politically.

Epstein, convicted of sex offenses in 2008 and charged in 2019 with trafficking minors, was found dead in a Manhattan jail cell that year. His death was officially ruled a suicide, though speculation has persisted that he may have been killed to prevent testimony implicating wealthy and influential figures.

In a Truth Social post, Trump described Epstein as “a lifelong Democrat” and noted that several Democratic figures, including former President Bill Clinton, had associations with him.

“Perhaps the truth about these Democrats, and their associations with Jeffrey Epstein, will soon be revealed, because I HAVE JUST SIGNED THE BILL TO RELEASE THE EPSTEIN FILES!” he wrote.

Trump also accused Democrats of using the issue to divert attention from his administration’s accomplishments and claimed that the Biden administration “did not turn over a single file or page” related to Epstein, while asserting that the Justice Department had already provided tens of thousands of documents to Congress under his direction. “This latest Hoax will backfire on the Democrats just as all of the rest have!” he added.

The president’s decision marked a reversal of his previous stance, during which he urged House Republicans to block the legislation. Trump has been mentioned in various Epstein-related materials, including an email suggesting he “knew about the girls,” though White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said the email “prove[s] absolutely nothing.”

Following his change of position, Trump instructed a probe into Epstein’s ties to prominent Democrats and urged House Republicans to support the bill, stating “we have nothing to hide.”

The House subsequently approved the measure 427–1, and the Senate passed it unanimously.
