Russia to Curtail Poland’s Diplomatic Presence
(MENAFN) Russia announced plans to scale back Poland’s diplomatic and consular operations within its territory after Warsaw ordered the shutdown of the Russian Consulate General in Gdansk, according to Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova on Wednesday.
“As a reciprocal measure, the Russian side will reduce Poland’s diplomatic and consular presence in Russia,” Zakharova stated to a Russian state-run news agency.
Earlier the same day, Polish Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski confirmed the closure of the Gdansk consulate, marking the end of Russia’s last functioning consulate in Poland.
Previously, Warsaw had closed Russian consulates in Poznan and Krakow during late 2024 and mid-2025, citing alleged acts of sabotage purportedly orchestrated by Moscow.
At that time, Russia retaliated by shutting down Poland’s consulates located in St. Petersburg and Kaliningrad.
Poland still maintains a consulate general in Irkutsk, in addition to its embassy and consular section in Moscow.
Until the recent closure, Russia operated an embassy in Warsaw and a consulate in Gdansk.
