Judge Dismisses Antitrust Case, Meta Wins

(MENAFN) A US federal judge has determined that tech conglomerate Meta is not a monopoly within the social-networking sphere, effectively throwing out an antitrust lawsuit initiated by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) concerning the firm’s takeovers of WhatsApp and Instagram.

Washington District Court Judge James Boasberg stated that the FTC did not sufficiently substantiate its allegation that Meta dominated the market and preserved its power by absorbing potential competitors.

“The court ultimately finds that YouTube and TikTok belong in the product market, and they prevent Meta from holding a monopoly,” Boasberg wrote. “Even if YouTube is out, including TikTok alone defeats the FTC’s case.”

The judge determined that Meta does not occupy a monopolistic stance within the pertinent market and issued a decision favoring the company.

The FTC initiated legal action against Meta in 2020, asserting that the corporation unlawfully amassed influence in the social-media landscape through its $1 billion acquisition of Instagram in 2012 and its $19 billion purchase of WhatsApp in 2014.
