US Envoy Applauds Iraq’s Parliamentary Elections
(MENAFN) US Special Envoy to Iraq, Mark Savaya, on Thursday praised the successful completion of the nation’s parliamentary elections.
“I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to the brave people of Iraq on the successful completion of the recent parliamentary elections, a crucial step toward strengthening democracy and stability in the country,” Savaya stated in an official letter shared on US social media company X.
The American envoy also lauded Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani’s administration for overseeing a smooth and timely electoral process, describing the elections as “a clear sign that Iraq is moving toward greater prosperity and sovereignty.”
Reiterating Washington’s dedication to supporting Iraq’s independence and reform initiatives, Savaya affirmed that the US is prepared to collaborate with the incoming Iraqi government to strengthen “our strategic partnership” in areas such as security, energy, and development.
Iraq wrapped up its parliamentary elections on Nov. 11, recording a voter participation rate of 56.11%.
Sudani’s Reconstruction and Development Coalition secured the top position in nine provinces, including the capital, Baghdad.
The Prime Minister indicated on Wednesday that he plans to initiate negotiations soon to form a new government.
A total of 7,743 candidates competed in the elections, among them 2,247 women.
