Dr Sarah Venter's research interests are in baobab ecology and specifically topics related to baobab recruitment, fruit production, growth, persistence, pollination and reproductive biology. She has supervised numerous MSc students who have worked on various aspects of baobab ecology. She has written an industry standard for baobab oil and involved in writing the industry standard for baobab powder. She is a founding member of the African Baobab Alliance and the Baobab Foundation for which she is involved in baobab conservation projects, including planting baobabs in villages and protecting baobabs from elephant damage.

She is also involved in researching of the distribution, ecology, use and cultivation of Entandrophragma caudatum (Mountain Mahogany).
