London City Airport To Introduce Car Drop Off Fees
Dhaka: London city airport will end free passenger drop-offs by car by the end of 2025, officials told media, as part of its“environmental conservation strategy” to meet decarbonisation goals.
The change will affect about 10pc of departing passengers, the airport said.
All other major UK airports already charge for vehicle drop-offs and pick-ups. Unlike its counterparts, London City will not provide a free shuttle from more distant drop-off points due to space constraints.
Fees have not yet been confirmed, but are expected to align with other hubs, such as Gatwick and Luton (£7 for 10 minutes) and Heathrow (£6 per entry). Blue Badge holders will continue to receive free access.
London City is the closest airport for more than half of Londoners, with 70% of passengers using public transport via the Docklands Light Railway. The airport contributed over £5 million to the new DLR train fleet.
“The charge will help London City meet its wider sustainability goals by reducing vehicle traffic, lowering congestion and emissions, and improving air quality,” it said.
The RAC criticised the move, saying the UK lags behind other European nations in providing free airport access.
Some critics warned the charge could push drivers to park illegally nearby, but the airport said it is working with the London Borough of Newham to manage traffic safely.
