King of Jordan orders to form committee to improve judiciary
(MENAFN) His Majesty King Abdullah on Monday visited the Judicial Council, commending the judiciary’s ongoing efforts to uphold justice and the rule of law.
During a meeting with the council president and members, His Majesty instructed the formation of a specialised committee to develop the judiciary, conduct a comprehensive assessment, and propose recommendations “based on previous achievements,” according to official statements.
The King emphasized that “an independent and fair judiciary is a fundamental pillar for the advancement of the state and the protection of rights and freedoms,” stressing the importance of institutional development and provision of tools to strengthen judicial independence. He called for supporting judges’ professional growth through “specialised training programmes and staff to enable them to perform their duties efficiently,” while ensuring suitable working conditions and enhanced facilities.
His Majesty also highlighted the need to “expedite and simplify litigation procedures without compromising fair trial conditions and the quality of judgments,” updating legislation to match technological advances, and improving coordination with relevant institutions. He urged the establishment of specialised departments within the judiciary to bolster investor confidence and encourage investment in Jordan.
Further, the King stressed the importance of “strengthening fair trial guarantees, developing and modernising criminal justice and sentencing policy, and expanding the application of alternative punishments,” while instructing the committee to review judicial procedures “in implementation of previous recommendations of the Royal Committee for Developing the Judiciary and Enhancing the Rule of Law.”
Judicial Council President Mahmoud Ababneh outlined the judiciary’s achievements, including the use of modern technology and digitization of judicial work, noting that “facilitating access to justice, establishing the rule of law, and building a judicial environment that attracts investment are cornerstones of judicial development.” Council members praised the King’s commitment to reinforcing judicial independence, modernizing legislation, and consolidating public and investor confidence in the judiciary.
His Majesty was accompanied by Royal Hashemite Court Chief Yousef Issawi and Director of the Office of His Majesty Alaa Batayneh.
