Türkiye’s Fidan Highlights Importance of PKK Dissolution
(MENAFN) The Turkish foreign minister emphasized the critical importance of the PKK terror group's cessation of activities, not only in Türkiye but also in neighboring countries like Iraq, Syria, and Iran, for regional security, stability, and to prevent foreign interference.
Hakan Fidan shared these views on Sunday during a joint news conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, while on his visit to Iraq.
Fidan described the decision of the PKK to disband as "undoubtedly a positive development."
He pointed out that while ending the group's violent actions within Türkiye is vital, the Turkish government also expects the PKK to cease its militant activities and withdraw from its occupied territories in both Iraq and Syria.
He stressed the importance of the terror group ending its armed struggle in these regions as well.
The Turkish foreign minister further revealed that the PKK currently controls significant portions of land in Iraq and emphasized the ongoing cooperation between Turkey and Iraqi authorities.
He expressed gratitude for the collaborative efforts of both Baghdad and Erbil in addressing this issue, highlighting the strong partnership between Ankara and the Iraqi government.
Fidan also praised the "Terror-free Türkiye" initiative as a positive development for the country and the wider region.
He underscored the "intensive" cooperation between Turkish and Iraqi institutions, emphasizing their joint efforts to address challenges professionally and with a focus on finding solutions.
Recalling the various agreements made during President Recep Tayyip Erdogan's 2024 visit to Iraq, Fidan noted the importance of implementing and following up on these accords to ensure progress on these critical issues.
